Most people who have a snake living under their house don’t know it. Snakes are quiet, secretive, and largely nocturnal. But they do leave evidence — subtle signs that tell a clear story about what’s happening beneath your foundation.
1. Shed Skins Near Foundation Openings
Snakes shed their skin multiple times per year, often in sheltered locations like crawl spaces. Finding a translucent shed skin near a foundation vent or inside the crawl space is one of the strongest indicators. The skin often retains enough detail to identify the species, which determines whether the situation requires urgent venomous response or standard removal.
2. A Sudden Decline in Rodent Activity
If you had a noticeable mouse or rat presence and it suddenly stops, that’s not necessarily good news. A snake moving in can suppress a local rodent population quickly. The mice didn’t leave because your house became less appealing — something started eating them.
3. Unexplained Musty Odor
